THE SCENE

Known formly as One Big Weekend, this BBC produced festival is the largest free ticketed music event in Europe. What does free ticketed mean? Technically, the show is still free, but with half a million people fans showing up some years, the BBC eventually had to issue tickets just to keep the crowds from overwhelming the grounds.

THREE REASONS TO GO:
1. Each year is bigger than the last. What started as a modest free show in 2005 has grown into a monster festival with a lineup that rivals any in the world. Check out the 2012 lineup which includes Jay-Z, Rihanna, Florence + The Machine, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetty, and Lana Del Rey.

2. A gold medal festival. This year, the Olympics are coming to London and the Hackney Weekend Festival will be part of the festivities.

3. It’s free. Did we mention that yet?
